Venus Williams and Serena Williams are the two legends of tennis. With 44 Grand slams, the Williams siblings are arguably one of the best players in the history of tennis. However, history would be different, had it not been for their father, Richard Williams; who had the plan ready even before the sisters were born.
In a recent conversation with her current coach, Eric Hechtman, the elder Williams’ sibling, discussed a wide range of topics. With one of them centered around Hechtman’s earliest memory of them. And it wasn’t just a few years ago when he took the role of her coach. The earliest memory of the coach with Williams also included her father, ‘King Richard.’ Who made it tough for Hechtman to focus?

What does Hechtman, has to say about the test of focus, taken by Williams’ father, back in the day?
When Venus Williams’ father tested Hechtman’s concentration
During the talk, the 7-time Grand Slam champion, asks Hechtman about his memory of working with her. As the two go way back, she asked, “What is your first memory of working with me? Because it’s not like it wasn’t formalized when we were like we met long before, we started a coaching relationship.”
Which, Williams’ coach replies in the affirmative and reveals that his earliest memory of both also includes a third person; her father. He revealed, “Yeah, I mean the first memory I was hitting with you. It’s got to be a kind of way back, and it was. I’d say it was more gotta say it was more memories of your dad and you.”
Richard started teaching the Williams sisters when they were just little kids. Hence, he would certainly have a plethora of stories in his bag to share. And he didn’t hold back when Hechtman and Williams were practicing together. As the coach further added, “You know, because back then your dad would always have so many stories. It was a test of my concentration because I would remember him talking to me behind me and there are always some interesting stories.”

However, listening to stories is an interesting thing to do, particularly when the stories are about legends. But in addition to enjoying the stories, it was also tough for Williams’ now coach to focus on the balls. He further detailed, “Whether it was about you, him, and Serena and you know, you wouldn’t miss a ball, so I couldn’t miss a ball. So I gotta be listening and focusing at the same time.”
To which the American tennis legend hilariously replies, “Oh my God, my dad is a character!”
Well, watching ‘King Richard’, which gave a little peak into the Williams household, one can surely concur with Williams on that part.
