“My Favorite Legend”: Hsieh Su-Wei Divulges Her Love for Venus Williams After Beating Her in Chicago

The ongoing Chicago Women’s Open has produced some great tennis so far. Ahead of the 2021 US Open, players are looking to brush up their game. Many top stars including Venus Williams, Elina Svitolina and Marketa Vondrousova are taking part in the WTA 250 event. For the American, Venus, it was a great opportunity to get some game time before New York. However, she fell timidly in the first round on Monday.
Venus Williams knocked out in Round of 32 at Chicago
Playing her first competitive tour level match after Wimbledon, Venus Williams was looking to find her lost touch. Having been eliminated in the second round at SW-19, the American signed up for Chicago to get some matches under her belt. To her surprise, Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-Wei cut the 7-time Grand Slam champion’s stay short. She outclassed Venus to enter the last-16.

41-year-old Venus walked out on court with her usual confidence. As the match begun, there were some minor changes seen in Venus’ game. She had a small change in her service motion, and was evidently rusty. When she tried to inject power into the game, the wily Hsieh countered it with her phenomenal change of direction. It was a brilliant display from the Taiwanese, who won the match in straight sets 6-2 6-3.

On what turned out to be a perfect outing for Hsieh, everything seemed to go her way. The Asian star exited prematurely at Cincinnati, but was thoroughly entertaining in her rout of Williams. After her victory, she spoke in a post-match interview about what it’s like to beat a legend like Venus. And not just any legend, but her ‘favorite’ one.

“You know it’s very difficult to play against a legend, and my favorite legend,” admitted Hsieh. “I always love her so much. She’s a very cute, very nice person off-court as well. So I was like oh first time to play Venus, so I better show that I’m good. I wanted to be good on court.”
