Legendary Australian coach, Darren Cahill, has been in the news recently. He surprised one and all after he decided to call it quits with Amanda Anisimova. Cahill ended his short coaching stint with the American tennis sensation. They had begun their partnership earlier this year after Cahill ended a successful six-year coaching stint with the former World Number 1, Simona Halep.

The Australian announced the decision during the tournament in Indian Wells. Further, he has explained in length about his shock decision.

Darren Cahill opens up on ending his coaching partnership with Amanda Anisimova

The Australian tennis coach took to Instagram to explain the reasons behind his split with Anisimova. He said, “I arrived in the US about 3 days before heading to Indian Wells and didn’t feel right. After the second day on court with Amanda, I quickly realized that there was no way I was going to be able go the distance and give her the attention and care needed to do the coaching job properly.”

Further, Cahill added, “It’s not easy to explain, but ever since emerging from the enforced 28-day quarantine late last year in Australia, I’ve had trouble getting going. That was on the back of 14 days’ quarantine before the AO in 2021, and then 9 months abroad because of our border restrictions and quarantine rules. After spending 28 days over analyzing and critiquing every coaching move, match and point of 2021, my mind was exhausted.”

Additionally, he discussed his situation with Anisimova and thanked her for understanding his condition. Cahill feels that the American is in great hands with Hleb Maslau and Rob Brandsma in her coaching team. He concluded by thanking everyone for the support.

Cahill’s influence on Anisimova this season

Anisimova added Cahill to her coaching team at the beginning of this season in Australia. Their partnership bore fruit immediately, as Anisimova won her first tournament of the season, the Melbourne Summer Set 2. Further, at the Australian Open, she managed to reach the fourth round. She beat four-time Major champion, Naomi Osaka in an intriguing three-set battle in the third round. However, she lost to the eventual victor, Ashleigh Barty, in the pre-quarterfinals. She was on an eight-match winning streak before going down to the Australian.

More recently, her campaign in Indian Wells ended on a sour note. She had to retire midway in the second round against Leylah Fernandez owing to illness. We wish Anisimova a speedy recovery and hope to see her back in action soon.
