Aryna Sabalenka is currently preparing for the Wimbledon Championships after her heartbreaking defeat in the French Open semifinals. She proved her dominance in the first round of the German Open by defeating Vera Zvonareva in straight sets (6-3 6-2). This victory perked up the Grand Slam winner and instilled much-needed confidence for Wimbledon Championships. After winning the match, Sabalenka was told that she was just five years old when the tournament was played on the clay. Twenty years ago, Zvonareva won her first match as an up-and-coming player against a top-ten seed in the same tournament. Now she lost to a top ten seed as a legend.

Sabalenka’s reply to this interesting fact was what caught the attention of the entire stadium, sending them into fits of laughter.

Commenting on beating one of the legends of the sport, who?is a four-time finalist in the Grand Slams and achieved a career-high ranking of 2 in 2010, the Belarusian cheerfully said that someday another young player would be told a story like this about her. She hoped to be a legend one day.

Sabalenka said, ?I totally agree with you. That?s crazy. Probably one day I?ll also be a legend, losing to someone here & you?ll remind me that I won my first match here when the girl was five years old.? Sabalenka was laughing throughout the chat and seemed happy with her grass court win after her defeat on clay.

While Sabalenka was seen is high spirits after her match, the other two members of the ‘WTA Big Three’ also had a similar start to the grass-court swing.

While Sabalenka defeated the Russian, Elena Rybakina also secured her victory over Polina Kudermetova in less than seventy minutes. Rybakina tasted the success of Wimbledon last year against Ons Jabeur, who now lost her warm-up match, unlike the top three seeds. Iga Swiatek is taking her time and practicing in her own way to excel on grass, a surface that she needs to master.
