Tennis, like any other sport, requires an official to ensure players follow the rules properly in the match. Like any other sport, tennis is also subject to umpire decisions that are not fair. However, some are downright infuriating. Recently, during a WTA 250 event, an unbelievable call took place, which not only angered the fans but also served to anger Martina Navratilova

This move became even more unfortunate for Zhang Shuai as the Chinese player was already struggling with mental health issues this year. After a struggling 2022 season, Shuai was left homesick as she missed her hometown.

As the scoreboard showed 5-5 in the first set of the match between Zhang Shuai and Amarissa Kiara Tóth, the Hungarian player served for the game. A cross court shot during the third point received an ineligible call. The player decided to challenge the call. But the umpire sustained the call even though the shot appeared to land on the line, as shown in the slow-motion replay.

The controversy made rounds on Twitter as several users posted the point on their pages. As it gained more traction, Martina Navratilova also decided to speak her mind. In the comment section of the video, she said, “Pathetic from any angle- umpire is not fit to call clay court matches and Toth is a bad sport“.

After the call, Shuai did not let the situation be. She fought with the umpire for several minutes, not agreeing to the point. But she decided to continue the play. She later decided to escalate the issue and asked for a tournament official to come have a look. However, before it could take place, Toth walked up to the mark and removed it with her show. Shuai became even more distressed with the move.

This caused her to undergo extreme stress as she seemed to be in a panicky state. Following the event, she broke down and had to take a breather. Unfortunately, the distress was too much, and she could not continue her match. She forfeited against Toth, and the Hungarian player threw her hands up in celebration.
