Coco Gauff, the 18-year-old American tennis ace, has quickly become one of the most promising next-generation players. However, even after achieving milestones such as being the youngest player in the top 100 of WTA, and the youngest Grand Slam finalist since Sharapova, she is still facing unhealthy criticism from tennis fans.

Last month, she claimed the headlines by reaching the finals of the French Open. Because of this, people showered her with wishes and had high hopes of seeing her in the last rounds of Wimbledon. However, when she failed faltered in the third round at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, her social media accounts were filled with negative and unhealthy comments.

Coco Gauff faces immense backlash on social media

Gauff started strong in this year’s grass swing. But on 2nd July, even after giving her best, she could not secure a spot in the last 16 of the tournament. In the aftermath of the result, she was targeted on social media. Therefore, a disheartened Gauff shared an array of unhealthy comments she received after her elimination from Wimbledon. She wrote, “POV: your dms after losing a tennis match.”

Thereafter, with a sad smile on her face, she added, “I swear I am trying my best.” The 2022 French Open finalist, after struggling in the first set and reviving herself in the second, lost the three-set long match by 6-7(4), 6-2, 1-6.

In her professional career, this was Gauff’s second clash with her compatriot, Amanda Anisimova. They first squared off in the clay court of Parma, in which the 2019 Linz Open champion came out of victorious. Therefore, with this match, their head-to-head record will be tied at 1-1.

Riding high on energy and form, the American entered the grass-court season after her run to the finals in Paris. Therefore, in order to warm herself up, Gauff participated in the Berlin based tournament of grass.

In the WTA 500 event, she defeated the former world No.1 Karolina Pliskova in the quarterfinals by 7-5 6-4 to book a match with Ons Jabeur. In the semifinal tussle against the Tunisian tennis ace and the eventual winner, the WTA No.12 incurred a straight set defeat.

Now, despite her disappointment at Wimbledon, she recorded the fastest serve in the ladies’ draw during her match against the Romanian Mihaela Buzarnescu, clocking 124mph. With her time at the All England Club ending prematurely, Gauff will be raring to go in the upcoming hard-court season.
