Veteran Sports Columnist Offers Fascinating Insights Into Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, and Billie Jean King’s Success Despite Their Short Stature

During the 1970 and 80s era, the tennis community witnessed the likes of Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, and Billie Jean King gracing the courts with their dominant performances. Despite their short stature, the WTA legends outclassed some of the legendary names in the women’s circuit in order to add a slew of major titles to their bags. Both, Evert and Navratilova, managed to clinch 18 singles Grand Slam titles with their resounding display of the game.
King, on the other hand, added 12 singles Grand Slams titles under her belt in order to solidify her position as one of the greatest in the history of the sport. Her dominance on the WTA Tour was further evident when she was the season-ending World No. 1 in six of the ten seasons from 1966 through 1975. Speaking about the supremacy of these former tennis players, the renowned veteran sports columnist, Sally Jenkins recently asserted that they were a force to be reckoned with. In the process, she also brought to light some of their incredible qualities on the court that helped them build their remarkable tennis legacies irrespective of their physical traits.

During her heydays, Billie Jean King was regarded as the shortest player in the women’s circuit given her 1.64 m (5 ft 4.5) height. Her fierce rivals including Margaret Court, on the other hand, were over six feet tall figures on the court. However, the 79-year-old tennis legend never her short stature hinder her performance, consistently outperforming her taller rivals.
The former tennis ace was further inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame in 1987. Similarly, there were a few other names on the WTA Tour who were around 5ft 6 but they managed to remain a resounding figure on the court. They were none other than Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova as the American tennis legends were shorter than most of their fierce opponents on the circuit.

Taking note of their journeys, Sally Jenkins recently shared some insight into the WTA legends’ legacy during the latest episode of the Passion Struck podcast show. She said, “Chris Evert is five foot six and 125 pounds. Okay. She was a squirt, compared to some of the people she was playing against. Margaret Court was over six feet tall. Right? Martina Navratilova had two inches and 20 pounds on her.”

Meanwhile, Jenkins also brought to light some of the remarkable qualities of the American tennis veterans which solidified their positions as the legends of the sport. She said, “Billie Jean King is tiny, right? For one thing, great examples that what matters is precision, grace under pressure, preparation, all sorts of things incredibly, well drilled in what they did, incredibly well practiced.”
