Amanda Anisimova has been in light following her second-round loss to 18th seed Leylah Fernandez at the Indian Wells. World No. 43 had an impressive start in the match, winning the first set with complete ease. Even though she continued her roaring game in the second set, it was Leylah who made a comeback and won the second set in a tiebreaker. However, what followed that left the whole tennis world wondering.

Losing the second set tiebreaker 0-7, Amanda came to the player bench, sat down, and began crying. Presuming the emotional outburst of not being able to convert the match points in the second set,  that didn’t bother the spectators much. However, Anisimova’s next step left everyone pondering. Wiping her tears, the player suddenly took the decision of retiring.

Thinking of it as a medical issue, match umpire Jennifer Zhang tried to stop her, insisting to get assessed by a physio first. However, by the time Zhang could make a call to the physio, the 20-year-old player had left the court.

“Can you wait for supervisor because it’s all of a sudden, let’s wait,” the chair umpire said to Amanda. However, she didn’t listen and went straight to pack her stuff. “Amanda please wait for the supervisor, thank you. Amanda wants to retire, she says she’s really sick, please come to court asap. OK, Leylah it’s finished,” the umpire further said to call off the match.

Walking out of the court, Amanda was given a warm gesture by Leylah Fernandez, who is now in round three and will face World No. 49, Shelby Rogers.

Anisimova started her 2022 season on the highest note possible. She kicked off her year at the WTA 250 Melbourne Summer Set 2. Even though she faced a tough first-round match, she cruised through the further rounds with complete ease. In the finals she faced qualifier Aliaksandra Sasnovich, beating her in three sets to win her maiden title of 2022. 

She next entered the Australian Open. Having a decent start in the first two rounds, she set up a tricky third-round clash with Naomi Osaka. The 20-year-old played a remarkable match against the four-time Grand Slam champion, beating Osaka in three sets. However, her run Down Under came to an end with a fourth-round loss to top-seeded Ashleigh Barty.

Not losing hope, Anisimova entered the WTA 1000 BNP Paribas Open. In the first round of the Indian Wells Masters, she beat fellow American Emma Navarro. However, the 20-year-old retired from her second round for reasons still unknown.
