‘Women Supporting Women Is What Helps Lay the Foundation to Drive Real Change’ – Serena Williams Joins the Nike Athlete Think Tank

Sport plays an important role in society. Apart from entertainment, it promotes many societal values such as peace, equality, and togetherness. Moreover, athletes are at the forefront of spreading these values in society through sports. Take the example of American legend Billie Jean King. She fought for gender equality in tennis. Further, her win in the ‘Battle of the Sexes’ proved to be a turning point in her fight. American legend Serena Williams has also played her part through through her off-court commitments.

The younger Williams has had an illustrious tennis career. She has won 23 Grand Slam titles, which is the most in the Open Era. She has been successful on the doubles circuit too, partnering with her elder sister, Venus Williams. Recently, Serena announced a collaboration with Nike over creating equal opportunities and promoting more women athletes across sport.

Serena Williams associates with the Nike Athlete Think Tank

The 40-year-old took to Instagram to announce the news of her new partnership. Revealing the reason behind joining this revolution, she said, “Women supporting women is what helps lay the foundation to drive real change. Creating a culture of positivity is why I teamed up with Nike for the Athlete Think Tank – a collective of women athletes holding honest conversations to help drive change. Because when we work together, we can fight for a brighter future and more equal and equitable environment for the next generation of women athletes.”

Further, its goal is to empower the next generation of women in sport. The Nike Athlete Think Tank includes stars such as Shalane Flanagan, Ibtihaj Muhammad, Sabrina Ionescu, and others apart from Serena.

The firm recently raised $111 million as an inaugural fund. Serena revealed that she aims to invest in women and diversity through this VC firm. It is a great move by her, and through these initiatives, Serena has proved to be a true legend on and off the court!
