Iga Swiatek to open the match proceedings on Centre Court at Wimbledon over Simona Halep

There were many speculations among fans and experts before the start of the Wimbledon regarding who should open play at Centre Court this year from the women’s side. Today, we finally have the answer, as Wimbledon announced that Iga Swiatek will open the proceedings at the Centre Court on Tuesday.

Last year’s Champion Ashleigh Barty has retired and the next option was Simona Halep, as she won the Wimbledon title in 2019. Due to the pandemic, the tournament did not take place in 2020. So, many favored the Romanian as she did not get a chance to open the play at Centre Court in 2020. However, Wimbledon decided to give the honor to the Polish player.

Also, it is worth noting that Halep withdrew from her semi-final match in the Bad Homburg Open today. It appears that she suffered a neck injury which prevented her from competing against Bianca Andreescu. Also, this could be one of the reasons why Wimbledon chose Swiatek over Halep, as they did not know whether Halep will be fit to play or not.
