‘You’re Not Alone’ – Chris Evert Urges People to Take Anxiety Disorders Seriously on World Mental Health Day

On the occasion of World Mental Health Day (10th October), former world number one, Chris Evert, highlighted the importance of mental health and how people should make it a priority. Evert firmly believes that people need to take care of their mental health while focusing on their physical health. Although the pandemic has brought awareness, there is still much work to be done in this area.


Following the lockdown enforced due to the pandemic, many prominent stars expressed their struggle with mental health, like Naomi Osaka and Nick Kyrgios.

The former US Open champion, Naomi Osaka, brought athletes’ mental health to the fore with her withdrawal from Grand Slam tournaments and the majority of the 2021 season. Yesterday, on the occasion of World Mental Health day, Evert was sympathetic to the plight of the modern-day players, and called for greater understanding of the difficulties they face psychologically.

She tweeted, “Anxiety disorders are the top mental disorders in the country. If you feel anxious, stressed or depressed, talk to someone, get help, you’re not alone❤🙏.”

While many professional athletes face performance pressures, tennis is particularly daunting because athletes often lack the camaraderie found in team sports. Moreover, they also lack the mental support that is usually available via teammates in other sports.

The WTA helps and empowers tennis players

Together with Modern Health, the WTA hopes to remove the stigma of mental health issues in professional athletes and help players who suffer from mental health issues.
