Martina Navratilova has been a tennis sensation who continues to voice her opinions regarding the developments in the tennis world. Recently, she talked about players’ views on not playing for Wimbledon. The tennis legend expressed her views on that and talked about what she would have done had she been in the place of the players.

Martina Navratilova talked about playing for Wimbledon out of sheer love and nothing else. She condemned the take of players like Naomi Osaka, who have shown reservation against playing Wimbledon because the ATP and WTA have stripped it of its ranking points. She said, “I could care less that there were no points given because I always played for the trophies, not the points, not the money.” Former world no. 1 expressed her love for the grass-court major and said, “So, for me, it’s Wimbledon and nothing else, and everything else came in second. This is not an exhibition.”

Martina Navratilova on players not playing Wimbledon

She added, “I don’t understand that view that players won’t play because there are no points. So you’re playing for computer ranking? I just wanted to hold the trophy.” Martina Navratilova is an 18-time grand slam winner and has made a name for herself on the grass court as well.

Why is Wimbledon with no ranking points? 

Wimbledon has banned the Russian and Belarusian players because of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Players like Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic condemned this move. WTA and ATP then sanctioned the Wimbledon by stripping off ranking points. Wimbledon has indicated that it would sue WTA and ATP because of a long-standing agreement.
