Martina Navratilova is known for expressing her opinions on various topics, even if they are unpopular. Her boldness and willingness to speak her mind have earned her both praise and criticism from fans and fellow tennis players alike. Recently, Navratilova took to Twitter to talk about her support for a former NFL quarterback who is receiving a lot of flak online for his new graphic novel “Change the Game”.

Yes, we are talking about Colin Kaepernick. His book and the interview he gave after publishing it have gone viral on Twitter and not necessarily in a great way. While fans and many others have called out Kaepernick for being “pathetic”, Navratilova supports the former quarterback and instead blames his critics.

Colin Kaepernick, in his recent interview, spoke about how his white adoptive parents “perpetuated racism” within the family. Colin, who is a man of color, felt distressed in those situations, as he explains to his audience. He also specifically highlights the instance when he wanted to get a cornrow and his mother said he looked like a “thug” with it. For Kaepernick, these behaviors were problematic, and he has put down all of that into the book.

Following this, Colin received heavy criticism on social media and his followers are now trolling him for his revelations. As most people tell their experiences, their parents were not happy with whatever they did, either. Be it an earring or a haircut, most parents had problems with what their teenage children wanted to do and express themselves. This experience is so relatable that now this has become a normalized form of behavior and thus Colin’s narrative received backlash.

Clay Travis, the American writer, also took to Twitter to talk about this issue. He sides with the majority of netizens as he said, “Colin Kaepernick says the white parents who adopted & raised him since he was a baby were racist. The fact this dude was made into an icon by sports media is downright shameful. He’s a pathetic sad, lost child who has convinced himself he’s a perpetual victim.”

Martina Navratilova reacted to this Tweet and said, “The people made him an icon, not the press. Colin didn’t ask for it.”

Navratilova essentially does not defend Colin’s revelations, which is what the majority of the comments seem to have a problem with. Instead, she means to justify how Colin’s popularity is exaggerated by the writer, Clay Travis.

This isn’t the first time Navratilova supported Kaepernick

Colin has been followed by brutal controversies and criticisms earlier as well. In 2016, he began to take the knee in protest against police brutality and racial injustice. At the time, Colin played for the San Francisco 49ers.

Navratilova also extended her support to Kaepernick during this incident and tweeted about it. She wrote, Colin Kaepernick took a knee to start a conversation about raising awareness of racial injustices in our country. #missionaccomplished“.
