‘Maria Sharapova and Khabib Nurmagomedov’: Veronika Kudermetova Reveals Her Idols After Reaching WTA Abu Dhabi Finals

Veronika Kudermetova is a name that is on the lips of every tennis fan at the moment. The Russian rightfully deserves all the praise and attention after her phenomenal performance at the WTA Abu Dhabi Open 2021. She recently thrashed Marta Kostyuk in straight sets in the semis of the tournament. The final scoreline of the match was 7-6, 6-4. In the post-match press conference, Kudermetova revealed that her inspiration was none other than Maria Sharapova.
“If I take my idol from tennis, it was Maria Sharapova,” told Kudermetova to EssentiallySports at the post-match press conference in Abu Dhabi.
Sharapova was a Russian citizen herself before she became a US citizen. Hence, Kudermetova’s love for Sharapova does not come as a surprise.

However, World No.46 Kudermetova also disclosed the name of her biggest idol, which will definitely excite combat sports fans.
“But you know, if I take like a person like mentality wise, I have like, you know, my idol now in the life. It’s Khabib Nurmagomedov,” added the Russian player.
It’s not at all surprising again since Khabib has been an inspiration to millions of people. The Russian fighter recently retired from Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) which was a heartbreaking moment for everyone.

Veronika Kudermetova has lost just two sets in the five matches that she has played at the Abu Dhabi Open 2021 so far. In the first two rounds, she didn’t face any difficulty and managed to reach the pre-quarters quite easily. After this, she faced Paula Badosa and defeated her to advance to the quarters. In her match against Badosa, the Russian delivered 10 aces and had an 80% win percentage on her first serve.

In the quarters, she was up against the World No.5 Elina Svitolina. Kudermetova didn’t have an ideal start as she lost the first set 5-7. However, she managed to gain momentum and won the next set 6-3. The final set went into a tie-breaker and Kudermetova was able to keep her calm which helped her beat Svitolina 7-3 in the tie-breaker.

Then, Kudermetova battled past Marta Kostyuk to secure her place in the finals. Although she is enjoying a great run, she will be facing the ruthless Aryna Sabalenka in the finals.
Sabalenka is currently on a 14-match winning streak. She’ll definitely be starting as the favorite in the finals. Will Kudermetova be able to break Sabalenka’s unbeaten streak and win the Abu Dhabi 2021 title?
