Titled as the New Year’s Smash Special, the show would bring closure to the Continental Classic Gold and Blue League. There was another storyline that would see an end, MJF and Samoa Joe vs The Devil. However, things did not go as planned during the Main Event Ring of Honor Tag Team Title match.

The show, while not revealing who The Devil is, saw a massive and shocking heel turn right before it ended.

Ahead of the final 2023 episode of AEW, MJF, the current AEW Champion, and Samoa Joe were in a feud with The Devil. In the last two weeks, MJF was attacked by a masked man, while Joe claimed to be his bodyguard and failed to protect him. This led to a confrontation during last week’s AEW Dynamite episode.

During the episode, MFJ accused Joe of working with The Devil, chalking up the fact that Joe was never hurt. Joe countered and alleged MJF was in cahoots with the masked figure to keep his title. As the two also broke out into a brawl, The Devil’s henchmen came out.

This resulted in a standoff between the duo and the masked gang. After clearing the ring of the Henchmen, The Devil himself issued a challenge. A tag team match for MJF’s Ring of Honor Tag Team Titles. Joe approved it, and the match was scheduled for tonight. Unfortunately, this would be the last night for MJF as the tag team champion.

Ahead of the match, Joe was shown injured backstage. This led to the tag match turning into a handicapped match, not in favor of the AEW Champion. After a valiant effort, MJF was overpowered and succumbed to a loss. The show ended with a heel turn by Samoa Joe swinging a chair at MJF, mirroring what Seth Rollins did in the WWE with The Shield. The show ended with Joe standing over a fallen MJF with the AEW Championship in hand. But what could be the reason for this shocking betrayal?

The possible reason behind Joe betraying MJF

MJF and Joe have feuded in the past. According to the AEW Champion, during a taping of NXT Brooklyn, a young MJF was pushed aside by Joe’s security team. For Joe, siding with The Devil ensures his henchmen will aid Joe in winning the AEW Championship. This will be a massive victory for Joe and a huge loss for MJF.

One take at a time

My passion for professional wrestling began when I saw Kane ripping the Hell in a Cell door off in the iconic 1997 match. I used to enjoy watching WWE re-runs at 5 in the evening when I got home from school. It was sort of a ritual for me.
