“I personally have never heard anything regarding that. I touched base a little bit on how my meeting with Vince McMahon went really well. We talked for about 30 minutes. He had a lot of complimentary things to say. As far as hearing that specific thing, that was not something I heard about. My four years with NXT was fantastic. My four years with WWE was awesome, but at the end of the day, I wanted to end up with AEW. Now that I’m here, I’m stoked.” H/t TV Insider
Even though Cole did not become a manager at WWE, he still was an important part of the company. His contributions to NXT have significantly helped in moving the brand forward.

Adam Cole and Tony Khan worked hard to make a successful debut
Tony Khan wanted to keep Cole’s debut the ultimate secret. Therefore, Cole wasn’t even in Chicago the night before AEW All Out. He went to another city, stayed at a different hotel from Daniel Bryan’s, and hid his face as much as possible.
Both Bryan and Cole appeared in the arena during the show. Even after their arrival, they were waiting in a trailer outside. The pro-wrestlers in the locker room also didn’t know about this until the very last minute.

Tony Khan wanted to take all possible measures to keep Cole and Bryan’s debut a secret. Even though some speculated that Bryan was debuting at All Out, Adam Cole’s was kept secret the entire time.
The only reports about AEW and Adam Cole prior to his debut were that All Elite Wrestling had sent Cole a contract. This was around the same time when reports emerged about Cole’s extended contract with WWE ended after TakeOver: 36 while his original contract ended at The Great American Bash.
