“A Damn Shame…”, “Not Much Has Changed”: Fans Enraged as Former WWE Official Opens Up on Backstage Reactions on Lita and Trish Stratus’s Raw Main Event Match in 2004

The women’s revolution took the WWE by storm in the 2010s. However, the foundations for it were laid years before. Lita and Trish Stratus featured in the main event of the December 6, 2004 edition of Monday Night Raw. And unbeknownst to both then, it went down as an iconic moment in wrestling history.

WWE’s programming rarely featured women in the main event segment if at all as the landscape was majorly dominated by male competitors at that point. And the two female competitors took it upon themselves to break the norm. But as a former WWE official points out it wasn’t without a huge pushback.

Jim Ross appeared on-screen as part of the announcing team but off-screen he oversaw the Talent Relations duties for the Stamford-based promotion. He recently tweeted about how Lita’s historic clash with the Canadian was unwelcomed by many male superstars in the WWE.

Ross posted, You wouldn’t believe the push back from male wrestlers that I received when they found out that @trishstratuscom and @AmyDumas (Lita) were going to close Raw. They deserved the opportunity and I’m happy that we did it. “

The clash between the two WWE Hall of Famers took place for the Women’s Championship. Lita bested then champion Stratus to a massive pop by her home state’s North Carolina crowd.

Charlotte Flair and Rhea Ripley’s clash for the SmackDown women’s championship is likely to headline the first night of the marquee event. ‘The Queen’ recently commented on why she deserved to feature in the main event. It is another fascinating achievement for the women’s division of the company. Flair has already been part of a historic main event at The Showcase of Immortals.

She was part of a groundbreaking triple threat encounter against Ronda Rousey and ‘The Man’ Becky Lynch in WrestleMania 35. That match served as the main attraction for the night.

Lita and Trish Stratus have earned their rightful place in the wrestling royalty. Their 2004 contest went a long way in cementing their legacy in the industry. Jim Ross has revealed the pushback by some male wrestlers at the time. But the fan’s reactions to his recent tweet make it clear which side they are on.
