AEW Executive Vice President, Cody Runnels, will soon start using his popular WWE in-ring name, Cody Rhodes, after winning an exhaustive lawsuit against his former employer. In an interview, he declared that he is excited about returning to his former name. There is a catch, though.

“I always do when I get the opportunity with the live crowd to send them home with some note I always assume its confidential when you’re talking to a live crowd. I’m very happy about being Cody Rhodes again.”

He will not be using the name inside the ring. The name Cody Rhodes will find glory outside the ring for other business purposes. During wrestling, he wants to stick to “The American Nightmare Cody”.

Cody Rhodes had to battle WWE for the trademark

Earlier during the year, he tried to trademark the name. Unfortunately, WWE still held the rights to the trademark, and he had to back off.

Recently, the company let go off the trademark rights. This presented Cody Runnels with the opportunity to own the rights to the trademark – Cody Rhodes.

The AEW star explained that WWE and he don’t have any bad blood over the trademark rights. However, Cody had to go to war with WWE for the rights and it was a lengthy and bitter process.

He referred to this during his promo against Darby Allin prior to their TNT Championship match on November 7th at AEW Full Gear.

“You’re looking at the man, the superstar, who left the empire, went to war, and actually won. And that pisses a lot of people off, because the truth that I speak contradicts the lies that a lot of people live!”

After Chris Jericho defeated Cody at last year’s Full Gear PPV, he could no longer challenge for the AEW Championship.

Now, with a change in name and owning the trademark, he might be able to challenge for the championship. It’s yet to be revealed if he will use this opportunity to his advantage inside the ring.
