“Any One Of Them Can Be Interchanged”- Eric Bischoff Reveals The Dent In WWE Superstars Today
In a recent interview, former General Manager of RAW, Eric Bischoff talked about one of the biggest problems in WWE today, which is the lack of a top star that everyone can look up to.
Over the years, WWE has seen talents come and go. However, there has always been a top-dog, a face of the industry that everyone looks at and worships.
The flaw is that today, WWE is the star while all the wrestlers are co-stars. Even though this might sound logical, Bischoff has other ideas.

“You know, it could be a little of both, I don’t know. I think over the past 5 or 10 years, there has been a decision, intentionally or unintentionally, to make WWE the star and everybody else the co-star,” says Bischoff. “And when WWE is the star and everybody else is the co-star, the co-stars could become interchangeable. And I understand that, to a degree, from a business point of view.”
Eric Bischoff recalls the glorious times of the Attitude Era
Nowadays, the many talents at hand leave no space for one dominant superstar. Bischoff worries that this may be the sole problem in WWE today. Despite these worries, he understands the relevance of it.
“[Jim Ross] just had a podcast about Stone Cold Steve Austin walking out of the WWE. Imagine the position that put WWE in,” says Bischoff. “You’ve got your whole company built up around one guy – all your marketing, all your promotion, all your plans built up around one guy, who decides for whatever reason, justifiably or not, he’s going home, or he gets hurt or he joins a monastery or whatever.”

The Attitude Era was built up around “Stone Cold” Steve Austin. His iconic character sold more tickets and merchandise than any other Superstar had ever before. This was a record that he held for many more years to come.
However, his shocking departure in 2003 saw a steep drop in sales for WWE. One of the most popular Superstars of all time had left a huge void that would take years to fill.
Bischoff acknowledges the danger of that situation repeating itself.
“You know, when you build your entire company around one guy and that one guy is no longer available, it does take a while to rebuild and it’s a problem.”

Dialing it back to his original concern, Bischoff feels that the crowd needs to be more attached to one Superstar rather than to all of them.
“Now, again, I don’t know if it was by default or by design, but right now, you’ve got a lot of top talent and any one of them can be interchanged for the other on any given pay-per-view and no one will really care,” explains Bischoff.

Bischoff is right in his opinion. WWE needs to find the perfect balance between mustering the crowd support for one Superstar and not totally relying on that one person for everything.
Perhaps Bischoff is right, we do need another “Stone Cold” Steve Austin.
