At 51, Dwayne Johnson has a physique that can compete with bodybuilders half his age. By virtue of his frame, he’s also one of the biggest actors in Hollywood (literally). It doesn’t take him much effort to portray the macho hero as it suits his size and presence. Yet, Johnson laid bare his vulnerable side a few weeks ago, as he opened up about his bouts with depression.

Fortunately, the Fast X actor was able to come out of his mental struggles. But do you know how he was able to cross the hurdles? Let’s find out.

In May, ‘The People’s Champion’ appeared as a guest on The Pivot Podcast. Speaking to hosts, former NFL stars Channing Crowder, Fred Taylor, and Ryan Clark, he discussed various aspects of his life and work. One among those was his battles with depression.

According to the WWE legend, he has been down with depression thrice- once while attending the University of Miami, once just after his divorce, and the latest in 2017. Fortunately, he has been able to overcome the struggles each time.

“The saving grace for me has really been my daughters,” he told the former NFL stars. “That’s been the saving grace because you look at them, and you realize, really, this is what it’s all about,” he added. Johnson has three daughters, one from his previous marriage with Dany Garcia and two with his current wife, Lauren Hashian.

The Rock has in the past also spoken about how he is surrounded by women in his life. Speaking to the hosts of Good Morning America in 2019, he revealed, “We have a three-year-old, Jasmine, then we have a 16-month-old, Tiana, and of course we have a 17-year-old daughter, Simone. And between Lauren and my mom, I am in all that estrogenic energy. I am the only guy.”

Admittedly, these females have helped him relax his mind and keep depression at bay. He often spends quality time with his daughters, Tiana and Jasmine, and posts videos of their playful adventures on social media. His oldest daughter, 21-year-old Simone, is currently working in WWE’s developmental territory, NXT, as Ava Raine.

Meanwhile, as a survivor, Johnson once gave an important tip to others struggling with depression.

Dwayne Johnson reveals the one mistake most people make while dealing with distress

The Great One has ‘been there, done that’. He has been in the quagmire and was able to escape the clutches of depression. Seeing others struggle, Johnson said that most people tend to not speak enough about it.

Speaking to Men’s Health in 2021, he highlighted that fact and said, “A lot of times in life, as you head down the road, you’re going to need help, and it’s all a part of life.”

He also said that asking for help when one needs it, is also the “most powerful thing you can do”. This surely would count as sound advice from someone who has been able to land three ‘People’s Elbow’ to depression in his lifetime.
