WWE Hall of Famer Edge, is one of the most famous wrestlers in the world, in more ways than one. He made history when he won the first-ever Money in the Bank ladder match. But did he want it?
Talking to WWE’s The Bump, prior to last week’s Money in the Bank pay-per-view, Edge was asked about his involvement in the first-ever MITB event in 2005. Edge won the match against all odds.
The win feels more triumphant if we look at the star-studded lineup. The match involved Chris Benoit, Chris Jericho, Christian, Kane, and Shelton Benjamin. However, according to Edge, he had to be convinced into working the match.

Edge said, “I wish I could say that I had this vision of how it would become its own PPV, and no, not at all. As a matter of fact, when they first told me that I’d be in this thing called the Money in the Bank match, I said, ‘Another ladder match?
Edge did not want to be known as “the ladder guy.” He wanted to be much more than that. As a wrestler, he wanted to work up the ranks in traditional matches.
He continued, “I actually said, ‘Don’t put me in it. I’ll find my way on WrestleMania another way and if I’m not on this year I’ll make sure I’m on next year, but I’m tired of ladder matches. I don’t want to get pigeonholed for that.’ That was not very bright thinking.” (H/t Fightful)
He would ultimately cash in the briefcase at New Year’s Revolution in 2006. He pinned the then champion, John Cena, to capture the WWE Championship.
