Former WWE Superstar Gillberg Hospitalized After a Heart Attack

Former WWE Superstar James Ellsworth took to social media to announce that Gillberg had suffered a heart attack, but is in recovery mode.

In an emotional video which he uploaded to his Twitter account, Ellsworth gave an account of the conversation he had with Gillberg’s wife regarding the situation.

Gillberg and James Ellsworth had a notable run together

Duane Gill has known James Ellsworth since the time he was born. The bond was strong enough for Gill to choose Ellsworth as his opponent for his retirement match.

Gillberg and James Ellsworth wrestled for Adrenaline Wrestling on February 28th marking the former’s retirement match. However, before this match, Gillberg and Ellsworth had formed a Tag Team to win the Adrenaline Championship Wrestling Tag Team Championship.

During an interview, Ellsworth revealed the conversation that led to the duo stepping inside the ring as opponents.

“Well, a couple of months ago, he said to me, ‘Yeah, I’m getting older. Wrestling on the indies is fun and everything. but as you get older your body breaks down. I’m going to have my last match soon.’ I said, ‘Alright.’ So we set up a show for him in Baltimore, Maryland. I said, ‘Alright Duane, we have a show set up for you with Adrenaline Championship Wrestling, and you can wrestle whoever you want.’ He said, ‘Well, I’m definitely wrestling you.’ I was like, ‘Oh, okay.’”

Gillberg worked for WWE the first time between 1991 and 1994. During this time, the company primarily used him to uphold and elevate other talents.

However, the company and Gill had their second run in 1998. This time, WWE put him in a match against Mankind at Survivor Series in the first round of an empty WWE Championship match.

WWE rebranded Gill as Goldberg’s parody version, Gillberg, following his popularity at WCW. After the rebrand, Gillberg had a successful run as a Superstar, which included winning the light heavyweight championship after defeating Christian.

Duane Gill left the company in 2000, but has made sporadic appearances ever since. The last time he appeared in the WWE ring was during the Kevin Owens show on February 13th, 2017 where he brought back the famous Gillberg character.
