CM Punk has been following the Straight Edge for a very long time. However, it is not just CM Punk, but Phillip Jack Brooks, who was originally a straight-edge member, and who blended it into his character. CM Punk used to feel like an outsider many times because of his beliefs. However, he made his pro wrestler image more congruent with his real self on the advice of one of his ex-girlfriends. This made the WWE creative team also pick the angle up and create a new stable. The Straight Edge Society stable had four members: Punk, Luke Gallows, Serena, and Joseph Mercury.

The stable was more of an entertainment and promo group than a fighting group. CM Punk preached about the straight edge ways to fans and also took in new members, who were supposed to get their heads shaved to join.
