The Undertaker has been sending his opponents to the grave since he debuted over thirty years ago. His character and aura can be matched by no one. The anti-hero personality of The Undertaker has never been broken for the last three decades. However, it seems that there was a time when “The Deadman” broke character after all.

After losing to Roman Reigns at Wrestlemania 33, it looked like a swan song ending for The Undertaker. Everyone had it in the back of their minds but no one expected it to actually happen.

Defeated and exhausted, The Undertaker took off his gloves and left them along with his hat inside the ring. He then went and kissed his wife, Michelle McCool who was in the ringside stands.

This was the first time that WWE fans saw The Undertaker break character. McCool herself spoke about that moment in a recent interview.

“The gesture of leaving his hat in the ring, that was his idea,” says McCool. “That was his way of telling the fans goodbye because as The Undertaker character he’s not going to gave a speech and thank the fans, just because of the character.”

The Undertaker breaking character made fans believe it was truly over

McCool explains how she knew about The Undertaker’s gesture. We all know that he would never break the character to give a speech so he came up with that gesture for us instead.

“So when he did that I thought, ‘okay this could be it’. But when he came over and gave me a kiss, that told me he’s serious because he broke character for the first time ever,” says McCool. “So I felt for the first time he might really be done, this might be it. So I truly believed it at the time.”
