“I May Have Gone a Little Too Far” – Mick Foley and Dwayne Johnson Recall an Iconic “I Quit” Match at WWE Royal Rumble

Today marks the 22nd Anniversary of the infamous ‘I Quit’ match between Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley. The match took place at Royal Rumble with the Hardcore legend’s WWE title on the line. To commemorate the occasion, both Superstars shared a throwback on Twitter.
But before that, let’s have some context. Mankind and Rock started feuding during Survivor Series 1998 when The Rock won the WWE Championship. Later, Mankind won his first WWE title at Raw is War, 1999.

Back then, The Rock’s villainous character was raising his stock, and Vince McMahon was giving him the desired push. Hence, the duo of Foley and Johnson settled for an “I Quit” match.
During the match, The Rock handcuffed the champion and hit him with eleven unprotected chair shots to the head until he fell unconscious. Finally, everyone heard Mankind shouting “I Quit” three times in a row, and The Rock was declared as the Winner.
However, Foley was unconscious for real, and it was actually a recording from a previous promo saying “I Quit.” But the Rock was the winner, anyway. Watch the snippets from the match below –

First, Mick Foley took to Twitter and shared a tweet saying the “duo may have gone a little too far on this particular evening.” He shared a still from the match, just before the chair shots.

Later, The Rock retweeted the post with his thoughts on the storyline and the match. He wrote, “For months this was such an elaborate and dare say, ‘nuanced’ storyline and build up to this hyper brutal ending. Two of the nicest men in pro wrestling doing the most savage and brutal things.”
He went on to say the pain and the brutality were in their DNA and thanked Foley for such a great match.

Mick Foley later revealed he did what he did to “elevate” The Rock for his upcoming feud with Steve Austin. He said, “I wanted to give people a very physical match that would show an extra side, another dimension to The Rock–one of ruthlessness and viciousness.”

Later on, the two Superstars came to terms with each other and even became a tag team called “Rock’ n’ Sock connection.” They won the Tag Team titles as well.
