Roman Reigns Shares The Origin Story of ‘The Wild Samoans’

The ‘Reigning’ Universal Champion comes from the legendary Anoa’i family that has established a distinctive place in the WWE history. His ancestors, cousins, blood brothers are all names we are very familiar with. Yokozuna, Umaga, Rikishi, The Tonga Kid, The Rock, and The Usos etc. are all branches in the glorious Samoan tree. The Rock and Reigns share the same grandfather, Peter Maivia. When Fallon asked about who was the first wrestler in his family and how his family came into the pro wrestling industry, Roman had a special story to share.

So it started with the high chief, Peter Maivia. He kind a mentored my father and my uncle, Sika and Afa, the Wild Samoans. They’re a tag team. One of the greatest tag teams of all time. Hall of Famers. But actually it started… They were just fans. And, you know, they went to a show back in the day in San Francisco at the Cow Palace,” The Tribal Chief said.

But how ‘The Wild Samoans’ entered the ring was an interesting story. “Peter Maivia was a huge star back then in the West coast at the time, back in territory days.He was wrestling Pat Patterson and Pat was beating him up pretty good. And my dad and uncle, they jumped from the crowd and kind of got involved. And so Pat knew, he was like, ‘We gotta get these guys out of the crowd. We gotta teach them the business. And that way, you know, I don’t have to worry about these guys anymore’. It goes all the way back to the 60s and 70s, yeah,” Reigns added.
