Universal Champion Roman Reigns is the biggest superstar in WWE at present. He has even overtaken Drew McIntyre, who was on a roll himself since the Royal Rumble and WrestleMania 36.

The Big Dog gave the performance of his life at Clash of Champions 2020 against his brother Jey Uso. The heel turn was already over with the crowd. But, the added essence at the PPV has taken Reigns to a whole new level.

In an interview with Complex Sports, Roman Reigns, who spent years as a baby-face, spoke about how the heel turn changed his character.

He said, “It feels good to switch it up, add a few different layers. For probably like four to five years, with the character I had. I am in some groove, I got to a point where I got into the babyface mode in my sleep. Especially with that energized crowd, it is a little weird being in the ThunderDome…I needed something that got me out of that conditioned mode and test me a little bit and that’s where I find myself now. Working with a little different attitude, kind of help me rely on my instincts, technically the opposite of what I have been doing. It is very cool.”

Roman Reigns was the good guy for many years, but deep down the WWE faithful knew that the heel character is where he belongs. The Juggernaut spoke about why this was the correct time to go through with the shocker.

The ‘Tribal Chief’ said, “I always needed that heat. It is kind of hard to tell, to be honest. Because many of our hardcore fans have waited for this moment. There is a satisfying effect that it happened. It has now come to that point how do we deliver it in a way that people say ‘oh, he is a bad guy now, he’s just this a nasty human being’.”

“I wanted to be able to do it in layers. The character is not defined as the bad guy, he is the guy… Technically, he is not wrong, but it has just made me rub everyone the wrong way. It might be a different route compared than what people used to seeing the old character take. I don’t think anyone ever had more than heat ever than I after I beat Undertaker on that Monday night.”

Reigns even spoke about how Heyman has helped him not only on screen but also behind the scenes. He said, “It is good to be working with him. Working with Paul and his kind of being a heel manager throughout his career. He has definitely helped, and it has been great working with him.”

“On-screen it is really cool and to flesh this character but just to be around him backstage it is pretty refreshing, especially now he is not in that role of having all of creative to be in charge of. He is just really helping me out with my creative and my direction going forward, so I definitely feel it is a power pairing.”

This partnership has already given brilliant moments to the WWE Universe all around the world. It will be interesting to see what the new duo can do and still keep it interesting for the fans.
