In WWE, where countless legendary battles have unfolded in the ring, the women’s division has risen to new heights with unforgettable matches that have left a lasting impact. Eight years ago, Sasha Banks and Bayley showcased their remarkable prowess in a match that led to the renaissance of the Women’s division in WWE. What is interesting is that the match wasn’t part of the main roster but instead down in NXT. Now, in a surprise twist, Sasha Banks hints at a WWE comeback through a message on this special eight-year anniversary.

Banks left WWE unceremoniously last year in May when she walked out before a RAW episode while still being one-half of the Women’s tag team champions. Since then she has made her journey to Hollywood and also joined NJPW. But now revisiting her famous NXT match with Bayley in 2015, Banks dropped a hint about her WWE return down the line.

Today marks the 8-year anniversary of a remarkable showdown that stands as not only one of WWE’s greatest matches but a watershed moment for women’s wrestling within the company. The impact of this 2015 match continues to echo, inspiring countless young men and women to chase their wrestling dreams. A recent post on Twitter by Mercedes Mone, who formerly wrestled as Sasha Banks, underscores the lasting impact of this match.

She tweeted an image of her and Bayley hugging after their 2015 match with the words, “Let’s do this again someday,” while tagging Bayley in the post. The bonds forged in the ring often withstand the test of time. This also hints at a possible return to WWE to compete against her friend and in-ring rival.

Bayley also wasn’t going to be left behind and wished her a “happy 8th“, a nod to the eight-year anniversary of their iconic match, while expressing her eagerness to share the ring with Mone.

Despite the evolution of their careers and personas, the possibility of a rematch remains alive, as is evident from their exchange on social media. Their old championship bout was truly remembered fondly among fans.

The match cemented both of them as great workers but what was to come next in their careers and in the immediate future exceeded all expectations.

Even as she forged WWE history, Banks had eyes on Japan

Sasha Banks is one of the most gifted in-ring performers of all time. Her matches with Bayley, Charlotte, and Belair ushered in the golden years of women’s wrestling. Despite leaving a legacy most would be envious of at the tender age of 30, Banks, now going by the moniker ‘Mercedes Mone’ had bigger dreams to pursue. Her pursuit of becoming the greatest-ever wrestler brought her to the land of the rising sun.

Speaking to NJPW, Mone said, “Seeing Manami Toyota and Akira Hokuto, Aja Kong, all these hard hitting matches, and it was like ‘wait, there are matches where women are outperforming and having better matches than the men?’”. Historically, in Japan, women’s wrestling has been widely held in high esteem since the early 90s with legends like Manami Toyota and Aja Kong innovating a lot of moves and sequences used by world champions to this day. This is in sharp contrast to the bra and panties matches the WWF was having at the time.

Mone disgruntled with the way WWE was treating the women’s tag team championships, decided to walk out on the company with fellow tag champ, Naomi. This opened doors for her to sell out the Tokyo Dome, the largest arena in Japan for WrestleKingdom, NJPW’s flagship event. Banks explained her decision by saying the following:

“STARDOM, to me, has the best women’s wrestlers in the world, and I really want to cement my legacy with my wrestling fans, to cement my name with the greatest of all time.” The Boss’s arrival sent shockwaves in the pro wrestling world as many fans were chomping at the bit to see her wrestle a stiffer Japanese style with some of the most talented joshis on the planet.

Fans got their wish as Mone tore the house down by beating Kairi, to become the first ever gaijin to become the women’s IWGP heavyweight champion. She later dropped the title to Mayu Iwatani, in a match that has fans and critics raving. She’s been on the shelf for the last 3 months with an ankle injury she suffered in a bout with AEW star Willow Nightingale. Many were hoping to see her debut in All Elite Wrestling at All In but those plans will have to wait.
