The Undertaker ruled the WWE through the shadows for 30 years until finally hanging up his boots in 2020 after WrestleMania 36. The backstage stories of the superstar are as interesting as his career in the WWE. One of those stories is how The Undertaker got his name after coming to the WWE.

The WWE veteran Robert Rudolph Remus, also known as Sgt. Slaughter once told the story of how he helped Vince McMahon in finding new talents. The Sgt. Slaughter gimmick of the superstar became so popular that even a GI Joe character was named after him.

Among the talents he helped Vince McMahon find, Remus considers The Undertaker as his favorite one. Sgt. Slaughter revealed in the phone interview with The Baltimore Sun, that he used to work in an office in Connecticut, finding new talent for promotion.

Sgt. Slaughter said, “Part of my job was to go through the boxes of letters and resumes. One of them happened to be a young kid by the name of Mark Calaway, who has short red hair and was working down in WCW. It was a tape and a little letter saying he’d be interested.”

The WWE contacted Mark Calaway, and the rest is history. The Undertaker went on to become one of the most iconic gimmicks of the promotion. But the story behind Taker’s first interaction with McMahon and his name is also intriguing.

Sgt. Slaughter revealed how The Undertaker got his name. “Vince said he had an idea for a character name and he brought up the name Paul Bearer. The next day I went to Vince, and I said I didn’t really care for that name for Mark in particular. I thought he looked different than that, and Vince said ‘like an Undertaker?’ and I said yeah! Maybe we should do Paul Bearer as his manager.”

Remus also spoke about the time when Calaway got invited to Rochester, New York, for his first match in the promotion. He was sent first to the ring, as they do with the rookie superstars. Remus recalled the first time McMahon had a glance at him, “Halfway through the match, I was on headset and I hear Vince McMahon say ‘Where did you find this guy? Send him to my office.’ Mark came out of the ring and asked me how he did, and I said Vince wanted to see him. He thought he did something wrong.”
