Stone Cold is one of the greatest of all times in professional wrestling. His greatness stems from the fact that not only was he a great ring-worker, but more so because of his antics, gimmick, mic skills, and storylines.
Austin’s trash-talking and beer-drinking are memorable for every wrestling fan. But how did he come up with the beer antics he did in the ring? How did Stone Cold convince Vince McMahon that chugging beer would make him a top superstar?
He talks about it in an old radio interview recently posted by a fan.

In the radio interview, a fan asked Austin how the beer-drinking came about for his gimmick, and he revealed that he did not come up with the idea.
“Man, I tell you what, that is an outstanding question that I wish someone could answer for me,” Austin said. “I didn’t invent the beer-drinking thing. We know Sandman was doing it before I started doing it in the WWF.”
Why Did Lita Stop Wrestling?
However, Cold doesn’t remember incorporating the beers into his act. For that, he needs to ask Vince McMahon. He said, “I was a beer drinker way before then, but I honestly cannot remember, and I’d love to ask Vince McMahon this question.”
Stone Cold gives credit to the Sandman
Despite the idea of it being inspired by the Sandman, Austin doesn’t think he copied the Sandman or ripped his character off. He used a great example to justify his viewpoint.
“Although Shawn Michaels didn’t invent the superkick… I don’t know how many people have used it in the past. Shawn Michaels was the one that took it to the level that he did.”

He has a point here! Austin’s character was inspired by what the legend before him did, but his entire gimmick wasn’t based on him chugging beers.
Stone Cold went on to give his respect to Sandman and said, “With no disrespect to Sandman, in all respect to Sandman. It was funny because would get two things confused and say ‘Oh yeah, I used to love when you would crash the beers on your head.”
However, Austin never crashed beers on his head because that was Sandman’s move. As Austin mentioned, he hit them on his head on occasion, but the former WWF champion mostly banged them together with his fist.
