Ric Flair as new “talent”?
There were speculations that Flair would return to the WWE in some capacity at the end of his Legends contract, which expired late last year. He was expected to return either as a manager of sorts or an executive. However, his new contract has labeled him as “talent”, which is surprising, to say the least.
Flair made his last competitive appearance in the ring against Sting at TNA in 2011. Sting is also a part of the old guard of pro wrestling. These men and women were the pioneers of the sport, who have grown it into the billion-dollar business it is today. However, there are serious doubts on Nature Boy’s ability to perform in the ring.

But the new contract signing might be a part of a larger plan. With the recent indefinite exit of Becky Lynch from the WWE, Ric’s daughter Charlotte has been ahead of the pack of wrestlers who could potentially replace her as the face of the organization. Re-signing her Hall of Famer father could be a part of a push to make her the face of the Women’s division in the WWE.

Charlotte has already been picked up from NXT and dropped into SmackDown and RAW as a part of the brand to brand promotion. So, it is safe to say she is on her way to fight for the main titles in SmackDown and RAW. Getting her father onboard may result in interesting storylines, which would definitely help with the recent slump in ratings.
A Misguided Signing?

The new contract signing, however, comes at a strange time. The WWE was subject to a huge financial hit due to the global lockdown and had to let go of a lot of its talent. A good number of wrestlers with commendable star power have already signed with rival promotions. Surprisingly, instead of trying to retain young, enthusiastic, and athletic performers, the WWE has signed a 71-year-old Ric Flair.
It remains to be seen if this was a good strategy or not. But till then, Ric ‘The Nature Boy’ Flair has returned.
