The reason ‘The Great One’ wanted to have his own identity in WWE could be because of his relationship with his father. At least, that’s what it feels like.
“They’ve had kinda off and on relationship for many years. I don’t know it was necessarily on at that time which might have, you know, helped with Rock not really wanting to take his dad’s name. But, it was strange over the years. Sometimes they were on, sometimes they were off. Over the years I know that Rocky was extremely proud that The Rock became who he is.”
Let’s not forget, when Johnson started working, he only had seven bucks in his pocket. Hence, he was happy to have a job but he was reluctant to play Rocky Maivia. But, he took on the work after Vince McMahon convinced him, and also because he needed the work.
