WWE Superstars have seen their fair share of botches throughout their careers. Most of the time, they just can’t help it, as was the case with CM Punk nearly 10 years ago.

CM Punk had just got his head shaved bald after an intense feud with Rey Mysterio went against him. To cover his shame, he wore a mask, similar to that of Mysterio’s. Punk would continue appearing in WWE with his then faction Straight Edge Society.

He was booked to fight Kane in an episode of SmackDown and was all set to put the “Big Red Machine” down. He did everything right but got it all wrong in the end.

CM Punk was about to finish Kane off with a GTS (Go To Sleep) and had him up for it. However, the next moment, Punk and Kane both fell to the floor in what would become one of the biggest botches.

The execution was totally ruined, and both Superstars had no idea what to do next. The question to be looked into is- what went wrong?

The Go To Sleep, Punk’s finishing move, requires him to hoist his opponent up on his shoulders and lift him off to meet the head to his Knee. This would supposedly knock out the opponent.

The worst part about this move is that whether the opponent is Rey Mysterio, John Cena, Brock Lesnar, or even the Big Show, CM Punk has to lift up the entire weight of the person and push him off his shoulders as well.

While CM Punk’s strength must not be questioned, the task may sometimes seem superhuman to perform for a man of his physique. This played a huge factor in the botch.

Kane and CM Punk must be blamed equally for the botch

On closely examining the replay, you may notice that Punk managed to lift the 300 pound Kane off his shoulders and there was contact. However, Kane also shares the blame for this mishap.

Kane’s hand somehow got wrapped around Punk’s head during the fall, causing him to topple over as well. Punk probably went to sleep himself after that.

Being in the business for years, Kane should have known better than to be dead weight for Punk. There should have been more effort on his end.

I also believe that CM Punk’s mask played a role in this botch. As you can see, the mask is covering his eyes in the replay. This may have caused him to lose focus and ruin the execution.

The worst part of it all was that instead of finding an alternate way of ending the match, the two Superstars finished the match by playing along. Punk pinned Kane for the win.

While this doesn’t go down as the worst ending in WWE History, it still is pretty amusing. Both Superstars may have been equally clueless after the match, which undoubtedly got a lot of people talking.
