Who doesn’t love some classic 80s action crime thrillers? The era has given fans many classics such as Charlie’s Angels, Starsky & Hutch, and many more. While their quality remains intact, a need exists for a new generation to experience the same thrill. This has led to many movies and TV shows getting rebooted in the modern era. One such classic could receive the reboot treatment. In fact, it was rumored that the 16-time WWE World Champion John Cena might be on his way to star in the lead role.

Could John Cena land a lead role in the reboot of Knight Rider?

The talk of the town is that John Cena could star in the reboot of an 80s classic crime thriller show, Knight Rider. Daniel Richtman revealed the news on his Patreon. While Cena is being “courted” to star in the reboot, Richtman said that Kevin Burrows and Matt Mider will write the script.

While there are no updates on when fans might get to see the reboot, the rumor mill suggests that this would be the first time the crime-thriller will make its way to the big screen. After the original David Hasselhoff-starrer aired its last episode in 1986, a reboot by NBC aired in the 2000s. The plot is fairly simple. It follows the chronicles of Michael Knight and his artificial intelligence-powered car, Knight Industries Two Thousand or KITT. While Hasselhoff stared as Knight, William Daniels voiced the A.I.-powered car.

While the show might not live up to modern standards, it earned acclaim during the time it originally aired. Moreover, with three movies, the franchise cemented its status as an important part of pop culture. Apart from Knight being the center focus, many science fiction elements made the show a fairly interesting one.

It was in 2018 that rumors of Cena starring in a rebooted Knight Rider came to surface. The WWE star addressed those rumors in an interview with ScreenRant but didn’t sound too optimistic about a movie being made. Cena commented, “Ehhhh, once again it takes a miracle to make a movie nowadays. It is still in the works and hopefully, it will come to fruition because the draft I read of it… I thought it was amazing.”

Currently, the theatrical rights are with Spyglass Media Group. In 2020, it was reported that a Knight Rider film was in the works with Aquaman director James Wan producing and TJ Fixman writing the screenplay. However, no further update on the development of the movie has emerged since. Now Cena has been linked with the project one more time.

One take at a time

For me pro wrestling has two things that I like the most, storytelling and fighting. Let?s just say movies are failing to keep me entertained in those departments. I grew up watching WWF and not WWE and any hardcore fan will agree that the two are not the same, but I love both iterations.
