Sami Zayn returned to WWE to claim what was rightfully his. He battled Jeff Hardy and AJ Styles at WWE Clash of Champions to secure the Intercontinental Championship. However, his celebrations for the same took a twisted turn on the latest episode of WWE SmackDown.

The event featured a backstage promo where Sami Zayn made an appearance with both the belts strapped to himself. The plot twist – the segment came to its end with one of the titles dumped in the trash.

The idea of this promo was to thrash Jeff Hardy. Now, both of them were preparing to face off later during the evening. Hence, if Hardy won, he would need to fish the title out of the bin.

Sami Zayn wanted the IC Championship in the trash

There was a special preview prior to WWE Clash of Champions where Sami Zayn had opened up about being stripped of the title. He had mentioned both AJ Styles and Hardy, but his frustration was heavily aimed at the latter.

He believed that Hardy should have thrown the title in the trash since it wasn’t the real championship. Unfortunately, when Jeff Hardy did not do so, Zayn lost his cool.

“When he won that championship the first thing he would have done if he understood etiquette, if he understood principles, if he had convictions, is he would have picked up the phone and called me and said, ‘Sami, I won this sham championship, it’s not the real championship and I’m gonna throw it in the trash because everybody knows you’re the real Intercontinental Champion, this isn’t right.’”

Zayn was more upset with Jeff Hardy since he considered Hardy to be his idol.

“That would have been the right thing to do and he didn’t do it and it broke my heart because you know, they say never meet your idols and this is why.”

It appears Sami Zayn did what he wanted Jeff Hardy to do. Now, his story is open to go in either direction. It can involve AJ Styles for a heel vs. heel match up as well.

Now that the company is pushing stars they generally would not, Sami Zayn is going to be one Superstar who will benefit from this new approach within the empty arenas.
