Xbox: Obsidian’s Latest Title Already Has A Million Players

Obsidian Entertainment is living the dream right now. The studio’s latest game ‘Grounded’ was unveiled at the Xbox Games Showcase and was released on July 28, 2020. As of today, the game officially has over a million players and things are looking good. It has definitely managed to surpass expectations and is quickly growing in popularity.
‘Grounded’ was already a Steam best-seller, a day after launch. The backyard survival game was certainly not expected to do so well after the preview at the Showcase. But never judge a book by its cover. The preview itself was very quirky, wherein the trailer paid tribute to “Cyberpunk 2077” by predicting it’ll be the biggest game of the year. ‘Grounded’, on the other hand, is the smallest game of the year as the devs claim (quite literally).

The announcement of the game reaching the one million players mark was made on the Xbox Wire. Game Director Adam Brennecke writes,
“We want to thank the community for showing support for the recent release of Grounded on Xbox Game Preview and Steam Early Access. In its first two days of availability, we’ve had over one million players explore the mysterious backyard, battle giant spiders, and gather tons of useful materials — which has absolutely blown away our small team of 13 here at Obsidian!”

Monthly updates starting from August 27th
It is definitely great to see that such a small team could produce something so amazing. But that wasn’t the only announcement. Adam also wrote

“With so many of you interested in our game, we can’t wait to bring you more to do in Grounded every month. As we look forward to building Grounded together, we want to let you know that this journey is just the start of the adventure and we will be making continued updates and fixes to ensure the best player experience possible. Also, starting August 27, we will begin our monthly delivery of game updates.”
This is good news for the fans who are already enjoying the game. More content coming to the game could only mean that the studio has big plans for their ‘small’ game.
The fans didn’t particularly love all the games announced at the Showcase. Apart from the discontent regarding Halo Infinite, a lot of fans complained that the other games didn’t really excite them. But Grounded’s success changes things. If the smallest game can see such a success, imagine what the other ‘medium-sized’ games could achieve.
