Ben Askren has had quite the week. The now-retired Welterweight fighter saw President Donald Trump talk about him. While it was more to emphasize the spectacular nature of Jorge Masvidal’s knockout of him, the POTUS was quite complimentary of Askren. In fact, he called the retired Askren a rising “young superstar.”
It keeps getting better for Askren, as the WWE also decided to send him a gift. That gift was a replica WWE Championship belt, something the promotion commonly sends to other major athletes to signify their importance. While Askren did most of his damage outside the UFC, his public profile increased dramatically under Dana White’s company.

Askren proceeded to ask whether fellow retired fighter and massive WWE fan, Daniel Cormier, will join him in the WWE as tag team partners. While they do share a similar background in amateur wrestling, the shift to sports entertainment might be a little harder.

Crossovers between the UFC and the WWE are common. It started with Ken Shamrock and Dan Severn, but soon included former WWE Champion Brock Lesnar. Lesnar became a UFC Heavyweight Champion as well, further opening the floodgates for WWE superstars trying their hand at MMA. This eventually led to the CM Punk experiment by the UFC, someone who has a relation with Askren.

Punk trained at Roufusport in Milwaukee under coach Duke Roufus, a camp known to produce champions, such as Tyron Woodley and Anthony Pettis. Another man who trained there? Ben Askren. Askren actually worked with Punk on his wrestling during Punk’s short-lived MMA career.

Daniel Cormier has been open about his admiration for professional wrestling. He brought that theatrical edge to his UFC fights as well, including a scripted confrontation between him and Brock Lesnar when DC beat Stipe to become Heavyweight Champion. DC is often linked with joining the WWE announce team, or even joining the company as a performer.
Keeping all this in mind, it isn’t surprising that Askren was sent a WWE replica belt. The people in WWE always keep an eye on MMA.
