Swimming legend Michael Phelps is one of the most decorated athletes in the world. The star etched his name in the swimming hall of fame with his speed and agility underwater. Over the years, Phelps has won numerous medals and broken many world records. Water has always been his best friend, even at times when he did not feel his best.

Phelps has been open about his distant relationship with his father. However, in 2014, when the swimmer was sent to rehab after a DUI arrest, their relationship took a turn for the better. While the athlete has since been vocal about his mental health issues, the father-son bond recently came into the limelight after Michael’s father, Mr. Fred Phelps, passed away.

Michael Phelps’ father wanted to make it to the NFL

Michael Phelps’ father, Fred Phelps, worked as a police officer at the Maryland State police. His role was to inspect commercial vehicles on the state lines. However, the retired officer had always dreamt of being a professional football player. When he was young, Fred played college football and was a part of the defense team. The legend’s father once recalled how he loved playing the sport and even the aggression that came with it.

Senior Phelps once explained in an interview that even hitting a fellow player during a game felt satisfying. He recounted how he played the sport since high school and wished to make it to the NFL. Fred also tried his luck at the Redskins trials but was rejected. However, he maintained that the sport was close to his heart. He quipped, “I liked it when the guards and tackles pulled so you could hit the biggest guy out there.”
