The two players were battling it out in a tightly fought second set of their opening round encounter in Acapulco. During the ninth game, Paire ripped his shirt apart. He was seemingly struggling with the hot and humid weather in Acapulco. Fortunately, the Frenchman didn’t receive any warnings from the chair-umpire for his actions.

The match began with both the players holding their serves in their first service games. However, Medvedev soon took control of the proceedings, breaking Paire’s serve in the third game. Further, the two players held their serves until the final game of the first set, when Medvedev broke his opponent’s serve to win the first set 6-3.

Medvedev can attain the top spot in the ATP rankings after this week

The Russian is having a consistent patch in recent tournaments. He finished as the runners-up in the opening Grand Slam of the season. On the other hand, Novak Djokovic failed to defend his Australian Open crown after being deported from Australia. In the process, the Serb lost 2000 valuable ranking points.

These events have presented Medvedev with a golden opportunity to rise to the top in the ATP rankings. He can dethrone Djokovic from the top spot if he wins the ATP 500 tournament in Acapulco. However, he can still attain the No. 1 ranking if he loses, provided other scenarios go in his favor.
