Today, Nick Kyrgios might be the undisputed ‘bad boy’ in tennis, but there was a time the legendary American tennis star, Jimmy Connors, made that title his own. Connors was unapologetically open about his views and actions, both on and off the court. Some of his most infamous controversial moments are missing the Wimbledon Parade of Champions in 1977, and being stopped by a steward for entering the Royal Box almost half-naked. It seems like Connors’ penchant for stoking the fire of controversy hasn’t diminished, as he indirectly pointed fingers at the hallowed Centre Court of Wimbledon.

The former World No.1 shared his unusual and out-of-the-box opinion regarding the grass in the Centre Court. On his recent Spotify podcast, Jimmy Connors and Brett Connors spoke about Golf and Tennis. Connors is awaiting the Wimbledon Championships as much as everyone but during his playing days, he didn’t show the same enthusiasm.

Jimmy Connors reveals why he never preferred playing in the Centre Court

In his Spotify podcast, “Advantage Connors,” the American ATP legend spoke about which surface he enjoys most and which court he loves to play on.

Connors said, “I always liked playing at Queen’s better because I’d come from the French when I when I played the French. So coming off the, you know, the slow clay of Roland Garros with the, with the heavy balls, you know to Queens was, you know, was a nice change a little quicker and kind of spend a day or two before the tournament, and I get used to the grass.”

The former player claimed that he loves to play on Queen’s than at Wimbledon’s center court. He said, “But the grass at Queen’s, the center court at Queen’s, now I might get a shovel in the head for saying this was as good if not better than the Centre Court at Wimbledon.”

Queen’s center court is more private and peaceful than Wimbledon’s. The Queen’s Club hosts the Queen’s Club championships and the former ATP number one might prefer the far less crowded court more than the condition of the grass. What do you think?

Does Connors have a point in not liking the Centre Court grass?

In 2022, the Center court of Wimbledon witnessed a chunk of grass missing from a corner. The surface turned concrete but did not affect the players, as it was far from their play area. But according to the statement of authorities, it is not the first time such a thing happened. As there won’t always be enough time for the grass to grow, the surface is sometimes painted green to camouflage the bald patch on the court.
