Davis Cup 2019 Heartbreak Still Burns in Novak Djokovic’s Memory

World No.1 Novak Djokovic has had an incredible season so far. The Serbian legend has owned five titles on the court including three Grand Slam titles this year. Interestingly, he lost just a single match at the Majors in 2021 out of the 28 that he played.
After not being able to succeed at the ATP Finals 2021, Novak Djokovic will not be heading for the Davis Cup Finals 2021. He will be leading Team Serbia there.

“Last memory was a sad one”- Novak Djokovic
In the pre-tournament press conference, Djokovic recalled his experience at the Davis Cup Finals in his previous outing. The tournament last took place in 2019, where despite reaching the quarterfinals, Serbia couldn’t battle past Russia, and therefore, it was quite a heartbreaking moment for the entire squad.

As a result, Nole stated that even though last year’s memory is a sad one for him, he feels great to be back at the tournament.

“It’s great to be back with the Davis Cup team. The last memory was a sad one, we were all very emotional, but nevertheless we were motivated to come back together and give it another go so here we are once again together again,” said Djokovic in the press conference.

Djokovic highlighted that the chemistry between all the five players is quite incredible at the moment. Thus, he seemed quite confident of his team’s success in the upcoming tournament.
“We are all friends and the chemistry in the team is very good. That’s an essential ingredient for success,” added the 20-time Grand Slam champion. [h/t Reuters.com]

Djokovic seems pleased with the new format of the Davis Cup Finals
In the same press conference, Djokovic emphasized that although he didn’t like the format last year, he is really happy that the Davis Cup Finals are taking place across three different nations this year i.e in Madrid, Spain; Innsbruck, Austria; and Turin, Italy.
“The Davis Cup should be experienced by more people. So I’m in favour of this year’s format and that there are more countries that can host group ties. I didn’t think the format worked very well two years ago,” concluded the World No.1 player.
Fans are really counting on Novak Djokovic and his team and want them to repeat their 2010 campaign. Will they be able to guide Serbia to their second Davis Cup victory this year?
