“Didn’t Deserve That Much Attacks”: Novak Djokovic Voices Support for Stefanos Tsitsipas Over Toilet Break Row

For a place in the US Open 2021 final, Novak Djokovic faced good friend Alexander Zverev in Arthur Ashe. Undoubtedly, both wanted to be in the final, no less than the other. Ultimately, the Serbian World No.1 remained undefeated, winning the match 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
But the class of the champion continued even after the match as Djokovic stood up for Stefanos Tsitsipas during the on-court interview. Seemingly, the Greek professional received heavy criticism for his elongated toilet breaks, whereas there is no rule to stop him.
What happened was Djokovic had taken a quick bathroom break after he won the third set. Accordingly, tennis legend Patrick McEnroe asked him about it, relating it to the Tsitsipas row.

Djokovic answered, “I got to stand for Stefanos Tsitsipas. I don’t think he is doing anything wrong. So, I support him… because the rule is not clear. He didn’t deserve that much attacks that he was getting in media from everyone.”

Unquestionably, Djokovic is one of the rare players who looks after his fellow competitors. But let’s see if he can make individual history on Sunday.

Notably, Djokovic lost the opening set for the fourth consecutive time. And as it happened three times before, he went on to take the following two sets of the match. However, Zverev broke the tradition, taking their battle to the decider.
But as the final set came, Djokovic left no room for error. Consequently, out of nowhere, the Serbian ace got a 5-0 lead.

Following that, Zverev earned a compensation game to put out the possibility of a bagel. In addition, he also recovered a break before the 20-time Grand Slam champion broke him again and closed the match.
After missing in the last year’s final and losing out in the semifinals this year, Zverev’s maiden major remains unrealized. Hopefully, his long wait to taste glory will soon finish on the Tour.

Daniil Medvedev to meet Djokovic or Zverev at the US Open 2021 final
Unlike Djokovic and Zverev, who battled toe-to-toe, Medvedev made his way into the final comfortably. Although the first-time Grand Slam semifinalist Felix Auger-Aliassime had his chances, the Russian gave a masterclass lesson on the court. He won the match 6-4, 7-5, 6-2.
Besides, Medvedev has been in the Grand Slam finals twice before the US Open 2021. However, he is yet to claim his maiden major tournament title.
Thus, the final will have a great significance on the Russian’s mindset. It will be interesting to see whether the third time’s charm works out for him or not.
