Carlos Alcaraz is being touted as the next big thing in tennis. The praise for the Spanish player is not undeserved, as his latest feats have given him the right to be at the top. With two grand slams and four masters at the age of 20, Alcaraz is shaping up to be a great player. Gael Monfils has become a fan of the young player and even supports his dream to become a legend, which he believes is achievable.

The young Spaniard aims to reach the status of the big three. However, he does not want the media likens him to them. After winning Barcelona Open, Alcaraz shunned a comparison to Rafael Nadal. Now Monfils believes he’s already on the way to becoming a player to remember.

In Montreal for the Canadian Open, Monfils set the stage for a great stint after beating Stefanos Tsitsipas in the second bout. After the match, he sat down for the post-match presser. There, he showed great confidence in Carlos Alcaraz. A reporter questioned him about his opinion of Alcaraz wanting to become a legend.

He said, “Yeah, I think every player wants to become a champion, legend, whatever. He’s already champion, you know. When you’re champion, for me, when you win slams, and he already won slams.”

Talking further about the general mindset of players, Monfils said that a player who wins grand slams ends up becoming a legend. Therefore, Alcaraz is already on the path to achieving his legendary status.  And I think he stated already that he wants to win a lot of Grand Slam. You know, to win a lot of Grand Slam is to become a legend. So it’s not even him wants to become a legend. But I think if you want to — if you win more than certain number of slam, you become a legend. So I feel like he’s on a track to win the number for him to become a legend. But don’t put pressure on him (smiling).”

Monfils has declared his faith in Alcaraz, and the youngster has also shown his ambition to be his own legend.

After a smashing win in the ATP 500 event, Alcaraz was experiencing an all-time high. With a victory on clay, the media touted him as the successor of Rafa. However, he brushed it aside and said that he did not want to be compared to another legend. Instead, the Spaniard wants to become his own player and not be known as the next anyone.

His words of confidence still play loud in the minds of his fans as he won Wimbledon over Novak Djokovic. Now with the US Open on the horizon, he could solidify his name as a future legend.
