New York is on fire! The heat and humidity were so high that Daniil Medvedev found it difficult to play. “Brutal match, brutal match, because of brutal conditions,” he told the press later. In the ongoing match at the US Open between Daniil Medvedev and Alex de Minaur, the Russian faced a major blow to his health. The 27-year-old was fighting for a place in the quarter-final, but he seemed sluggish.
The former World No.1 has not won a major since the 2021 Flushing Meadows title. He reached the finals of majors twice but couldn’t click the title. Now, in his match against de Minaur, the weather conditions were his biggest challenge.

The 3rd seed won 2 of his 3 matches in straight sets. But the match at Louis Armstrong Stadium was making him sweat and desperate to win the match as de Minaur was in the lead. Despite taking a precautionary medicine before the match, humidity took a toll on Medvedev and he struggled with breathing.
According to a post by ‘Olly Tennis,’ the one-time Grand Slam champion had to take the help of an inhaler. After being one set down, the doctor rushed to Medvedev’s aid, and the two discussed the situation.

The Australian won the first set, 2-6, and was leading the second. Medvedev had considerable time to turn the match towards him. He recovered from the setback and won the next three sets. With this win, Medvedev has also secured his spot at the season-ending Nitto ATP Finals—the third player to qualify after Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic.
While Medvedev was able to overcome the weather conditions and win the match, Ons Jabeur also faced a similar situation.

The Wimbledon Championships finalist started her Flushing Meadows run with a medical emergency. During her first round against Camila Osorio, the Tunisian experienced breathlessness, due to which her blood pressure had to be monitored. Jabeur has a history of asthma, and it took her time to adjust to the humid weather. She managed to defeat Osorio, 7-5, 7-6 (4).
Similarly, while playing against Qinwen Zheng, Jabeur made a series of errors. She also faced some breathing issues. This gave Zheng an edge over the former World No.2, who was already struggling at that point.
