At the age of 20, Carlos Alcaraz is currently the world number 1. With such impressive talent at a young age, he has been compared to several personalities in tennis over the span of his short career. The most common comparison is with Rafael Nadal. Rafa’s uncle, however, believes that Alcaraz has shades of his greatest rival, Roger Federer.

Since Alcaraz hails from Spain, the comparisons to the King of Clay are quite obvious. But the world number 1 is not a fan of any comparisons drawn. As per the 20-year-old, he is not here to be the next of any player and would rather follow his own journey.

As Carlitos prepares for his match against Novak Djokovic in the French Open semifinal, many are wishing for his victory. Several tennis personalities have already commended his abilities and have also relayed advice on how he could win. Among many, is Antonio Nadal, Rafael Nadal’s coach, and uncle. Having won 16 Grand Slam titles with his nephew, Toni Nadal was the record holder of the most Grand Slam titles won as a coach until Marián Vajda and Novak Djokovic won their 17th Grand Slam title together in the Australian Open in February of 2020.

Toni, however, believes that the young Spaniard, Alcaraz, reminds him of an up-and-coming Roger Federer. In 2003 and 2004, Federer began to shine. He won his first grand slam, the Wimbledon, in 2003 and won three grand slams in 2004.

Toni told Eurosport, “He is full of confidence and in excellent shape, physically and technically. It reminds me of the eruption and superiority that Federer showed since the end of 2003 and, above all, in 2004”.

Alcaraz’s current dominance over other tennis personalities reminded Rafa’s uncle of the time a 21-year-old Federer had begun to make the sport his own. In a similar manner, Alcaraz has reached the top even sooner than the Swiss Maestro. While Alcaraz reminds Toni of a young Federer, most of the world draws parallels with Rafa. The ATP number 1, however, does not enjoy any comparison.

Carlitos is no one’s replacement

After his triumphant performances at the Barcelona Open, Alcaraz became the replacement for Nadal in the French Open. While many would love that compliment, the 20-year-old stated that he does not want to be anyone’s replacement. He also said that while his absence on the clay court is sorely missed, he is not interested in taking Nadal’s mantle.
