ATP rules on racket abuse and on-court conduct

The ATP has defined the violations for racket abuse in its handbook. It says, “Any player who violently or with anger hits, kicks or throws a tennis ball, racquet or other equipment within the precincts of the tournament site.” Under such circumstances, the players can face penalties that include fines up to $500 per code violation under standard cases. However, fines can go up if the incident is aggravated or the player is repeatedly involved in such a situation.
Moreover, severe cases could also result in a player losing prize money and ranking points from the tournament. Further, unsportsmanlike conduct violations can carry additional financial or disciplinary actions. With the cases of racket abuse being so common, many renowned players have faced massive financial penalties for their actions.

Under such circumstances, Tiafoe smashed a single racket repeatedly and did not injure anyone or cause any damage to the property. Additionally, he wasn’t reported for any verbal abuse or physical misconduct. Thus, if fined, it is expected to be comparatively minimal, ranging between $3,000 and $5,000, which could increase depending on the ATP’s review of the severity and intent behind the act.

Nonetheless, what has happened cannot be changed, and the American star will await the ATP’s review of his controversy to know the penalty he would have to bear for his actions.
