“I’m Not Coming Back Just to Say Goodbye” – Stan Wawrinka Announces Return to Tennis at Monte Carlo Masters

Stan the man is back! In a recent announcement, Stanislas Wawrinka announced that he will be returning to the ATP circuit this clay season. The Swiss Grand Slam Champion says that he is aiming for the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters for his return.

He had previously said that he was planning to return for the French Open, but had not specified a date. But with the recent announcement, he surely has made his fans and supporters happy.

Wawrinka’s goal is to return to clay

The Swiss star, who has always been in the shadow of fellow Swiss Roger Federer’s super success, had to stop playing due to a foot injury sustained last March. But in an interview with L’Equipe he said that it was never his plan to retire from tennis after this injury. He also mentioned how he was still hungry for more wins and was definitely looking forward to being back on the court.

“I’m not coming back just to say goodbye,” he said. “What I want, is to again have these emotions. I still have this fire in me that makes me love tennis, love to play, love to train, love to endure.”

This is not the first time that Stan Wawrinka has been dealing with injuries. He also had double knee surgery in 2017, but he maintains that his dream since then has been to win another ATP title. The former world No. 3 has 16 singles titles to his name, including three Grand Slam titles- one each of US Open, Australian Open, and French Open.

He is the only player to have won multiple Grand Slam titles since the Big Four started their dominance.

“Since my knee surgery almost five years ago, my dream was winning another ATP title… I haven’t done everything I want to do in tennis yet. I didn’t anticipate stopping with injury,” he said.

Wawrinka’s last title was in May 2017 when he captured a trophy on home soil in Geneva, and it is an understatement to say that fans are waiting with bated breath for the return of the Swiss to the Tour.
