Novak Djokovic has achieved everything one could achieve in tennis. He has broken records upon records and amassed enough Grand Slams that his record won’t be broken for a long time to come. But he’s not done yet. Regardless of everything he has scripted to his name, he still puts effort day in and day out. Training each day to ensure that his competitive fire burns rich in his heart, he recently talked about what motivates him to continue.

Along with the factors that keep egging him towards excellence each day, he also talked about how he would be satisfied even if he were to leave the sport today. After 24 Grand Slams and 40 masters titles, the Serbinator would bow out with a smiling face. But something is still keeping him going.

Novak Djokovic on his motivation to continue playing

After achieving what Djokovic has in his tennis career, many would leave the sport with a smiling face. But few will have the fire to continue playing and extending records. Currently, the record for grand slams, masters and weeks on number 1 all have Djokovic at the top. Going into the Nitto 2023 ATP Finals, he said that he is driven by more than just accomplishments.   

“I also love competing, I love the sport. That’s my greatest motivation really, because I’ve made a lot of records, I’ve broken a lot of records and it’s great,” Djokovic admitted in an ATP Tour interview. “But even if I leave professional tennis now and reflect on everything I’ve done, I can be extremely, extremely satisfied. So I don’t have a pressure to keep on competing, but I still have desire and still have the level.”

The fire of the sport is what has helped the Djoker go far in the sport. “I’m playing at a very high level, so records are there obviously as a huge inspiration as well, no doubt, and history of the sport. I still want to create my own history and history of tennis and see how far I can go.”

The fire in his belly keeps the motivation to play alive in him. At his age, he has astounded many tennis personalities with the players he is playing against.

Djoker’s current exploits still surprise tennis personalities

Chanda Rubin is a former Top-10 player who now works as a Tennis Channel broadcaster. During a recent edition of the Tennis Channel Inside-In podcast, she talked about how Djokovic astounds her with his current abilities and how the Serbinator was one match away from achieving the Grand Slam accomplishment.

Even Jimmy Connors couldm’t hold back the praise, saying, , “We’re talking about a 36-year-old guy who’s making the headlines. And I’m going to say it again. I like that.” He continued, “He does everything he can to be the best he can be. All you have to do is just give him respect for everything he’s put into it. And by the way, he’s on number 24.”

Djokovic is not stopping anytime soon as he aims for an Olympic medal in Paris in 2024 while also competing at the Australian Open. Even at the age of 36, he is still playing against the best youngsters in tennis. His motivation also seems endless, and he wants to break every record.
