While the 38-year-old Swiss tennis legend dogged the friendship question, he mentioned how they have conversations in between, but they are not always about the sport. Wawrinka entered the professional tour in 2002, and at that time, Federer was already a part of it. Both of them played alongside each other for their country in the Davis Cup across various ties for around 10 years.

Not only that, they also partnered for Doubles, five times in 2008, 2011, 2012, and twice in 2014. Back in 2022, when the 20-time Grand Slam champion retired, the 38-year-old opened up about what Federer meant to him.

Back in 2022, just like a lot of tennis fans, Wawrinka also shed tears, witnessing the former world number one step out of this sporting arena. A few months after his retirement, in a podcast, the 38-year-old talked about how he considered his compatriot a big brother and a friend, which even made it difficult for him to process Federer’s retirement.

He said, “I cried for Roger (Federer). It was hard, a strong feeling. Even talking about it is difficult. When I came on the tour, he was already there. He was like a big brother to me, a friend.” Along with that, they are the ones who took gold in the doubles competition at the 2008 Olympics, making their friendship even more special.
