Novak Djokovic has reached dizzying heights in the sport of tennis. In his journey, he has brooked a myriad of controversies. It has been a part of his life for the better part of the last few years. However, this has put an unfortunate dent in his reputation. One might think that if he were to be less controversial, the entire world of tennis would hail him just like they do Roger Federer. The former director of Nike certainly seems to believe so. But the ex-coach of Serena Williams came to Djoker’s defense.

Patrick Mouratoglou defends Novak Djokovic

The co-founder of Nike, Mike Nakajima, recently had an interview with CNN about Roger Federer. He left Nike for Uniqlo in 2018. As per Nakajima, it was one of the biggest mistakes of the sports apparel company to let him walk.

He stated that Djokovic carried similar potential as Federer in terms of being marketed to different brands. Companies cannot market him like several other players because of the ‘dark cloud’ that unfortunately surrounds the Serbian maestro.

Nakajima talked about several issues that tarnished the current number 1’s reputation. He talked about when he struck a lineswoman in the 2020 US Open, which led to his disqualification. He was also embroiled in the COVID-19 vaccination controversy that added to his image as an unmarketable individual.

“And Djokovic? He could well be the most successful tennis player ever. But there’s always a dark cloud around him. It’s like he brings it upon himself.” Nakajima gave his opinion on the Serb. He further stated that any company would prefer a player with a ‘squeaky clean’ image, as they will be easy to market for.

None other than Patrick Mouratoglou rose to Djokovic’s defense. He stated in a tweet that asking for perfection is denying our nature as humans. He also stated that he would prefer a human being with flaws rather than an image of false perfection.

“To answer Nakashima about Nike and Novak: Whether we agree or not, like or dislike Novak, I personally prefer a real human being with his qualities, his beliefs and his flows than a perfect untrue image of perfection. Sanctifying perfection is denying our condition as humans.” he said.
